Design Process

Initial consultation

  • Rapport

The success of your garden design is primarily driven by your relationship with the designer.  The most important part of the first consultation is for us to meet and you to decide how we will work together.  Finding the right designer for you is key and I will aim to present myself in an honest and open way, so you can decide if I’m the right designer for you.

  • Requirements

We will discuss your requirements and identify the most important considerations for the design of your garden.  I will explore your preferences and tastes regarding the style and function of your garden.

  • Basic Site Survey

I will undertake a simple site survey noting key constraints and approximately measure key dimensions and levels.   The simple survey will allow me to provide you with a quotation for any design work – a detailed survey can be undertaken in due course.

Project Brief and Costing

I will provide you with a brief and breakdown of the costs for the project.  I have over 15 years experience in garden design and construction so can give you a realistic idea of the overall project cost and how certain design choices with affect the budget.

Site Survey

A detailed site survey to record measurements, levels, falls, aspect and soil quality (if required).

Concept phase and discussion

In my experience, this the most challenging phase of the process.  During this stage I will explore various design solutions and through regular communication we will agree the optimum solution for you and your site.  I can offer various options at this stage and you can choose which route you prefer – Options:

  • Hand drawn design idea sketches:

These sketches will explore various options for the design and layout of your garden.  They are simple and serve to promote further discussion on the ideal solution for you.  My experience has shown that this is very useful and the client is often surprised by the options and chooses the design they didn’t think they wanted!

  • Hand drawn concept sketch:

If we feel nearer to the solution I can draw a single concept drawing.  This will begin to realise the design and promote further discussion to refine the design further.

  • 3D Concept design:

Whilst hand drawings are extremely useful, they have their limitations and can make it difficult to visualise the finished garden.  A 3D software based design will allow you to better explore you new garden.  You can walk through the garden and explore it from every angle.  The 3D software design has the added advantage that we can develop and edit your garden through a series of iterations.  This allows us the start with simple conceptual design and develop all aspects as we  better understand the detailed requirements.

Should you wish, we can discuss how to make your garden greener.  We can discuss various ways in which the garden design and construction could be better for the environment.

Detailed design phase

After the concept phase I will produce detailed drawings of your garden.  These can include construction drawings and planting plans if required.
